Testimonials

On February 19th 2010, Koen Duijnmayer received his MSc diploma Geomatics with distinction. Below you will find his testimonial as well as the summary of his MSc thesis, titled ‘Sediment characterization by geo-acoustic inversion of marine seismic data receied on a towed hydrophone array’.
I joined the Geomatics master programme in September 2007, having almost finished my bachelor study at Aerospace Engineering. Being tired of the abstract and slowly evolving world of aircraft and spacecraft, I decided to make the switch to the more tangible and dynamic field of geo-information. I couldn't have made a better decision.
The master programme of Geomatics did suit me very well, by providing a broad basis to discover the topics of my liking, while giving much freedom to choose those elective courses of my interest. Besides, the flexible programme allowed me to spend three months on finishing my bachelor, without causing a significant delay in my studies.
Another aspect I've always appreciated much is the relatively small group of students, of which about half are from abroad and most have a different educational background. Because of this, I learned much about other cultures and related fields of study during the many activities we did, both inside as well as outside the curriculum.
Next to my fellow students, I will always remember the staff at TU Delft as being very helpful if I found myself having difficulties with any issue. I'm also grateful to them that I could play a part in some of their innovative research projects that society will hopefully benefit from in the future.
Looking back to the Geomatics programme now I've graduated, I also value the experience of working in a project team that I gathered during the Geomatics Synthesis Project. This project not only gave me practical experience with acquisition techniques, processing methods and project management relevant for working at a company, but many decisions I have to make in my current job are in fact similar to those we had to make during this project.
Altogether, the MSc Geomatics programme has more than made true my high expectations, and I will recommend it to any student.
Experiences of Hang Yu, 1st year geomatics student from China
This September I started my MSc in Geomatics after finishing my Bachelor's in Surveying and Mapping at JiLin University in China. Over the past forty-four days, I really experienced a lot here in Delft. The MSc Geomatics is a big challenge for me. I experience new things everyday, broaden my knowledge, and practise the needed skills. Now I have a really full schedule, like everyone here does. But I like the busy life at TU Delft. I feel energetic when I see dedicated students going to lectures on bicycles and having discussions in groups. I guess this is the charm of TU Delft for students all over the world. It's a place which efficiently educates future engineers. My classmates come from all over the world. They are great. I like to study in such an international group. Geomatics is an international subject. People all over the world experience the benefit brought by Geo Information, moreover, it is a necessary part in solving environmental problems. At TU Delft, I have met so many clever, funny and professional teachers and they are always willing to help. All of this makes me sure of my decision of coming here. Also, Delft is a peaceful and friendly place for living and study. Till now, in the Netherlands, I have been to the Hague and Rotterdam. I have tried the Haring fish (also a challenge). I like to ride a bicycle here without having to stop all the way....I enjoy the busy life here, and I am looking forward to every new day.
Sven Briels, master’s student, started the MSc in Geomatics after the Bachelor Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology
This master provides a very flexible program in an emerging market. Although geo-information has been important throughout the ages, very recent techniques like GNSS (e.g. GPS, GALILEO), laser scanning, radar interferometry, and widely available internet connections have almost reinvented its playground. The resulting booming market, combined with a lot of freedom to change the program to your own interest, makes this master in my opinion one of the most interesting available. Interesting hot research combined with good job perspectives, what else could you wish for?
These recent techniques, which are all covered in the program, and the huge impact their results can have on society (think of navigation, location based services, disaster monitoring) drew me from the very conservative but high tech Aerospace field towards the innovative but approachable Geomatics field.
My Bachelor in Aerospace Engineering and especially the minor in Earth and Planetary Observation proved to be a very good basis for this master. This allowed me to use the time reserved for the convergence program to broaden my perspective with courses in for instance Earth physics and space instrumentation. Even if this is not the case for you, the Geomatics program still offers more elective than obligatory courses!
Cornelis Slobbe started the MSc in Geomatics after completing his higher professional Bachelor’s in Geodesy/geo-information at Hogeschool Utrecht in theNetherlands
“Geo products are ‘hot’. Geo-information is becoming more and more widely used and this trend shows no signs of stopping. The steadily increasing number of non-specialist users are unaware of the possibilities and impossibilities of geo-information. Nor do they understand data collection. These are the areas in which Geomatics graduates can make a real difference. What can you expect from data of a certain quality and what would it be unrealistic to expect? Which method of collection best suits a specific application? It is this open view of the field and its diversity which make it such a great challenge. Just take a look at the collection of the data itself: from GPS to radar, measurements at sea and remote sensing… Not to mention the processing of data and related areas such as GIS technology. Other programmes are more oriented towards geo-informatics. At Delft I can get to grips with all kinds of aspects of Geomatics and pursue a direction of my own choosing. Another positive point is that the programme operates on a small scale, which means the lines of communication are short. If you have a problem, you can just drop in to see your teachers.”
