Programme - in detail
The EPA curriculum consists of modules within the following themes or fields:
- Policy Analysis focuses on analysing and structuring complex problems. Important aspects are the policy analysis paradigms, methods for problem structuring, multi-actor systems, systems analysis, policy modelling and policy design.
- Economics deals with such topics as formulating trade-offs between costs and benefits; ethical dilemmas involving economy, safety, health and the environment; strengths and weaknesses of market regulation strategies; economic aspects of development; and the use of large-scale infrastructures.
- Systems modelling is the process of describing the world as systems of interacting factors and actors. Methods such as data analysis, continuous systems modelling, discrete systems modelling are covered.
- Management addresses issues such as cross-cultural management, project management and the management of organisations – issues which are essential to successfully implement plans, projects, policies, and sustainable innovations.
- In addition, in the third semester students will follow specialisation courses in a particular policy field or discipline or which focus on specific issues, tools or skills.
Examples of challenges tackled by EPA students in their thesis work include:
- Managing intellectual property rights in inter-organisational collaboration
- The provision of assured safe infrastructure for mobile telephony in The Netherlands
- Study of successful public-private partnership for highway construction and maintenance in China
- ‘Push to Talk’ - Opportunities for mobile operators in Africa
- A cost-benefit analysis of storage opportunities for wind-power
