Support and Supervision
Supervisors
A supervisory team typically consists of a minimum of supervisors - usually a daily supervisor (Assistant or Associate Professor) and the main Promotor (Full Professor/Chair) - and a PhD Mentor.
The team can involve additional researchers or educators, for example when the doctoral project involves collaboration between departments or inter-faculties co-joint promotions. Preferably, the supervision team combines a meaningful combination of junior and senior research and PhD coaching expertise.
The Promotor selects the members of the supervisory team from within the departments and institutes involved in the research track, on the basis of matching expertise and skills regarding the chosen research topic, and in agreement with the PhD student. Also, (inter)national co-supervisors and/or co-promoters from within various (inter)national research networks may be involved, often scholars from the national research schools or partner institutions where the student followed courses or an internship.
PhD Mentor
The faculty Graduate School appoints a mentor to each PhD student. The mentor can coach and (if necessary) intervene on behalf of the PhD student.
The intended roles of the mentor are:
- To act as a sounding board;
- To provide support to the PhD student, focusing on the PhD process and reciprocal relationship and drawing attention to potential bottlenecks;
- To refer to other relevant people within the organisation.
