C9.M1 PhD Start-Up

Course description:

To help our PhD students to get off to a good start, we offer an introductory programme on the whole doctoral process: the PhD Start-Up course. All PhD students must attend this course as it is a mandatory part of the Doctoral Education Programme of the TU Delft Graduate School.
The PhD Start-Up is a 3-day residential course that aims to help PhD students build up a solid foundation at the beginning of their four-year PhD programme. It will equip you with the tools you need to be able to work in a ‘tuned-in’ and fully confident fashion for the coming years.

Please note that the moment of participation should be in accordance with your PhD supervisory team. We advise you to participate within 0 - 4 months from the start of your PhD contract.

Course objectives:

To acquaint you with the following subjects:

  •     PhD processes and methods;
  •     Personal and professional management skills;
  •     Dealing with cultural diversity.

Teaching method:

The PhD Start-Up is hosted at a venue outside of the TU Delft campus.  The PhD Start-Up will help facilitate a successful start, by giving you new insights into ‘what lies ahead’ (in the form of interactive workshops, active teaching and reflective learning) and helping you to establish an enjoyable university-wide network of peers. The programme will also help you to prepare your PhD Agreement meeting with your PhD supervisory team.

Course Enrolment

If you would like to register for one of the next sessions (16-18 April 2012 or 4-6 June 2012) please enrol via this link.

N.B. In the registration form, you are requested to fill out your ‘baancode’. This question only applies to PhD students that are not a member of the Graduate School. If you are not a member of the Graduate School, we kindly request you to fill out your ‘baancode’ so that we can bill your department for the cost of the training.

About the Lecturer(s)/Coach(es)

The PhD Start-Up team is usually comprised of 4-5 lecturer's/coaches with varied backgrounds. Half the team has an HR-related background and will focus on the personal/professional management skills. The others have a background in research and are there to help you to get familiar with the methods and processes of your PhD.
