C7.M2 Assessment of Learning Results

Course Description

In this course, you will learn how to assess your students’ results and why is that important. This course can be considered as the last of the ‘teaching courses’ series, as it focuses on the educational foundations of assessment and monitoring of learning results/outcomes/products. The main emphasis of the workshop will be on how to assess students in their final stages of any course/teaching programme, and how to develop an assessment plan that is in alignment with the development of the initial learning objectives.
Tests and examinations are inextricable aspects of higher education. Study success rates are often equated with positive results in tests or examinations. Tests and examinations are often the only means that lecturers and students have to measure the result of their efforts. Furthermore, the contents and method of testing give direction to the learning process itself. The study behaviour and learning results of students are largely determined by the examination process students expect to reach. It is therefore important for educators to carefully consider what and how they are going to assess, which is exactly what we’ll be doing in this course. The course will include topics like the effect assessment has on student learning, reasons for testing, steps in assessment design, how to align assessment with the learning objectives, prerequisites of a good test, types of tests, different views on assessment and marking tests and papers. The first session contains several discussions and development exercises, and the second session will build upon your own teaching activities and course(s) assessment procedures, if possible.

Learning objectives

At the end of this course, you will be able to…

  • Align the examination procedure to the learning objectives of your course.
  • Develop/adapt and/or design an assessment plan, including e.g. assessment criteria and test matrices.
  • Assess on the basis of the learning results whether your students have mastered the learning objectives.
  • Analyse the results of the assessment process (e.g. test results) and be able to draw conclusions with respect to the quality of the learning process and the evaluation process itself.
  • Cooperate with peers or in teams to establish the quality of the test material.
  • Reflect on own work and the work of students regarding difficulties within the subject-matter, acting accordingly.
  • Reflect on personal learning objectives for professional development with respect to matters of assessment.

Teaching Methods:

Theory and discussions, development exercises and participants’ own work.
