C5.M1 Think-tank: Formulating propositions, drawing abstracts, constructing posters
Course description:
You never know when you're finished with your PhD, until you are able to confidently explain your work in different ways and for different audiences. The proposition forces you to explain yourself in a short sentence for a broad audience; an abstract gives you a longer paragraph for those interested to get in your work; a poster is a great way to illustrate your points in an attended or unattended conference place and finally a complete book makes you put everything in one medium for a very select audience (ie. your committee). In this workshop Think-tank we will help you communicate your research from different perspectives and in different types of media and formats. Moreover, the workshop will help you make tools to think differentlly about your work.
Learning objectives:
Taking part in the workshop will provide participants with:
- A better way to communicate their research in different formats and for different audiences;
- An insight into how the audience perceives the verbal, visual messages;
- The value of communicating research in different ways to define and structure the research.
Teaching method:
The workshop uses the following formats:
- Brief introduction to the value of abstracts, propositions and posters
- Brief discussion of the homework
- Hands-on exercises to help you extract the essence from your research
- Reflection using peer discussion
- Creation of a rough outline for a poster
- Brief presentation of all the work by each student
