C13.M1 Presenting Scientific Research
Course description:
The following aspects will be covered in this course:
- preparation: from abstract to performance
- cross-cultural awareness
- argumentation
- voice and posture
- showing enthusiasm
- using visual aids (e.g. Power Point)
- introducing and thanking speakers
- dealing with questions and reactions
- peer review of presentations
This is not an English language course. For PhD students wishing to refine their (writing) skills in English ”Writing a scientific article in English” is recommended.
Course Objectives:
- (further) develop insight into effective presentation techniques;
- increase skills in applying presentation techniques in a range of situations (presenting research for experts or laymen, formally for a large audience or informally for a small audience).
Teaching Method
The course will take three full days and will be quite lively and intensive. The maximum number of participants is 8, so as to ensure that there is ample time to discuss each presentation.
The entire course and all the presentations will be in English. During the course, each participant will give one short (4-minute) and one longer (approx. 20-minute) presentation. Short exercises will also be done, including improvised presentations. Each presentation will be recorded and discussed extensively.
