C12.M4 Conflict Resolution and Negotiation Skills
Course description:
Everyone who collaborates with others in professional situations (e.g. work) will meet with contradictions, different interests and different positions towards concrete decision making. Conflicts are not necessarily negative, but they can lead to reduced efficiency and reduced work satisfaction. Especially people in management positions are expected to handle conflicts in a responsible manner. With this course participants learn to recognise and manage conflicts. Emphasis lies on efficient and effective negotiation behaviour.
Learning objectives:
To become acquainted with:
- Effective negotiation and conflict management behaviour
- Executing two-party and multy-party negotiations
- Preparations for negotiations
Teaching method:
Basically the organisation of this course is built according to the experimental learning theory of David Kolb, that is to say that after practice (role plays, games and other exercises) come reflection and some discussion, then analysis and finally the translation of the newly acquired insights into new experiences.
After the course, students have to write a paper on a conflict in which he/she him/herself has been a party to. This paper must be handed in to the lecturer within three weeks after the course. Reviewing of papers will be done in close collaboration between lecturer and participant

About the Lecturer(s)/Coach(es)
Johan den Hartog is a qualified Drama Teacher and convinced that real life as well as the more or less artificial life on the performance stage revolves around conflict. Interesting drama always concerns conflicts, and interesting conflicts a lot of times express themselves with dramatic force. He is now a lecturer at the faculty of Technology, Policy and Management of TU Delft and as such teaches a lot in the field of communication skills, conflict management and collaboration skills.
