C11.M1 How-to: Get the Most Out of Your Research Information

Course description:

To conduct your research you need information. It is not always evident to find the way through the huge amount of available information.
This 3½ hour workshop will show you how to master this information and how you get the most out of it. You will be guided through different steps of your information needs. The exploration of the research field will lead you to find key authors or journals etc. and make a map or a review of your subject. For the literature search you will reflect on your search plan and select and use efficiently relevant resources. You will use tools to manage your information and keep-up-to date. And finally you will consider various aspects of publishing like copyright, peer review and how to choose a journal or conference for your next contribution.
These skills increase the effectiveness in searching, finding, assessing, managing and processing the information.

Course objectives:

After this workshop you will be able to:

• Explore and make a map of your research field;
• Conduct a literature search for a well-founded research;
• Manage your information;
• Keep up to date on your research field;
• Publish consciously.

Teaching method:

During the workshop participants have to answer questions by searching in different resources. The results are discussed and examples demonstrated. The questions are formulated such a way that participants can directly work on their own research subject. Background information can be found on TUlib (http://www.lib.tudelft.nl/tulib/index.htm) and in blackboard (course information literacy 3)
