Exhibition Sweet&Salt (Zoet&Zout) at Kunsthal Rotterdam

TU Delft is one of the sponsors of the exhibition Sweet&Salt that is to take place in Kunsthal Rotterdam. Sweet&Salt is an exhibition with more than 100 top art works and iconic media images on the significance of water in the lowlands. Kick-off TU Delft Climate Institute

Delft University of Technology has recently established a new scientific institute on climate: the TU Delft Climate Institute. To mark the launch of this new Institute a kick-off event will be organized on the 1st of March. During this scientific event internal and external stakeholders will discuss important challenges for the future and the role of TU Delft Climate Institute. With a number of inspiring lectures by invited national speakers we will discuss the long term perspective on the climate change research, the multidisciplinary approach and cooperation opportunities with the TU Delft Climate Institute.

Kick-off TU Delft Process Technology Institute

On Friday 2 March the newly established TU Delft Process Technology Institute organizes a conference on process technology for the future world. The leitmotif of the conference is the role of multidisciplinary research in advancing progress in process technology. Among the speakers are Gregory Stephanopoulos of MIT and Alberto Fangareggi of Dow Chemical Company. All students and staff who are interested in the subject are welcome to participate in the conference. Participation is free, though registration is obligatory. Symposium KIVI NIRIA: Artic Battle

The battle for the Arctic is heating up now that global warming is turning the Arctic into an undiscovered resource hotspot. Also, the famous North-West Passage will become the new highway for cargo to the East within a few years. This symposium will be the first Dutch maritime platform to give an overview on current challenges, economic opportunities and future trends. This symposium will be hosted by KIVI NIRIA offshore and marine technologies and involves speakers who have accepted the challenge of going beyond Nova Zembla. More information

Delft Culture concert 2012 / Playing together

The Delft Symphony Orchestra will be playing a special concert on 31 March 2012 at the Aula Congress Centre of the TU Delft. For the occasion youthful guest performers from in and around Delft will complement the orchestra. The total line-up of over 100 musicians will perform the following works: Finlandia - Jean Sibelius, Symphony no. 8 "Unvollendete" - Franz Schubert, Water Music Suite - Georg Friedrich Händel and Lord of the Rings – Howard Shore. Delta Programme Knowledge Conference

On 3 April the second Delta Programme Knowledge Conference will be held. TU Delft organizes this year’s conference together with other knowledge institutions and the Delta Commissioner’s staff. The conference is centered on three themes: Advances in knowledge development, Knowledge questions that arise in practice and Delta development and management abroad. In April the 2nd European Conference on Sports Innovation will take place at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. This international conference provides a forum for research organisations, companies, sports organisations and national contact points active in the field of sports, sporting goods and sports innovation from all over Europe to exchange information, to present new information, to discuss the future directions and priorities in the areas of sports innovation and to nucleate partnerships and joint projects. Smart measuring with rubber ducks and floats

Pupils from Year 8 of the Openbare Montessorischool Jan Vermeer will be helping TU Delft to chart the flow of water through the city’s canals. On the morning of Monday 21 May they will hold a rubber duck race as a warming-up exercise, and then they will help to track 1,100 floats – which have been fitted with special tags – as they float through the canals of Delft, to see exactly where they go when floodgates are raised. On 1 June the children will present the measurement results to the Municipality of Delft and the Delfland District Water Board during TU Delft’s Zomerfestival. The measuring experiment is part of the project ‘Smart measuring and monitoring’ from engineering and consultancy firm Witteveen+Bos, Munisense BV, the Municipality of Delft, Delfland District Water Board and TU Delft.

Various water-related activities are to be held for employees, students, associates of TU Delft and Delft residents during TU Delft’s Water Week from 28 May to 1 June, including the announcement of the winner of the TU Delft Urban Water Movie Contest. The Summer Festival on Friday 1 June will be a big event, and local residents are once again very welcome to attend this year. More information

On Friday June 1st 2012, the seventh ZOMERfestival will be held in the grounds of Sport & Culture. In this special anniversary year, the Zomerfestival will cater to a wider audience and be accessible to at least 6,000 visitors. TU Delft will celebrate its 170th birthday with a party that will appeal to the entire TU Delft community, and the residents of Delft and its surroundings areas. More information

Delft will be hosting this year’s Kennisfestival (festival of knowledge). Delft is home to the regional Knowledge Alliance, and Delft is the knowledge centre for the Zuidvleugel area. The name Delft is synonymous with both history and innovation. Delft excels in water technology, for instance. A lot of widely-used innovative technology hails from Delft, and Delft keeps on adding to this. Delft invests a lot in science and research, and TU Delft and local colleges have sound international reputations. Theme of this year’s knowledge festival is 'Water'. TU Delft scientific congress: ‘Water & the City’

During the ‘Water & the City’ congress, international scientists from the fields of Science, Design and Engineering will congregate to actively work on actual cases involving cities and their specific water problems: Singapore, Jakarta, Rotterdam and New Orleans. More information
Braindrops

As part of the university anniversary activities, Delft Outlook has got together with TU Library to create the new web-TV programme Braindrops. In each episode we will be talking to a world-class TU Delft academic about their life’s work. The first episode will feature Mark van Loosdrecht. We will also be looking at a societal problem through the eyes of the engineer. The presentation is in the capable hands of science journalist Desiree Hoving.
