Traffic jams

(Photograph by courtesy of ANWB Audiovisuele Dienst)
Thursday 9 October was declared a traffic-jam-free day by the ANWB (Royal Dutch Roadside Assistance Service), NS (Dutch Railways) and Rabobank. According to a report on the ANWB website, the fact that more people worked at home during the peak periods or took the train to work led to the total traffic-jam length indeed being shorter. The number of traffic jams, however, was greater, due in part to roadworks.

At TU Delft too, researchers are focusing on the problem of road congestion. Can computer models, game theory and intelligent cruise control help to prevent traffic jams? Read more about transport research at TU Delft.
