Compiler Assisted Runtime Adaptation
The thesis researches the possibility to better adapt such that the application and the hardware platform on which it runs are better. It is focused on heterogeneous multicore embedded architectures. The three aspects of application optimizations addressed in the dissertation are: hardware software mapping, memory allocation and parallel execution. For each aspect, an algorithm is developed and using a suitable application, it is tested on the experimental hardware platform. The programming paradigm on which this work is based, is the Molen programming paradigm, extended and adapted for our specific platform and operating environment. The platform is composed of a General Purpose Processor (GPP) - ARM, a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) - Atmel Magic Diopsis and an Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) - Xilinx Virtex4. This heterogeneous multicore platform was developed in the context of the hArtes European project. The validation was done using industrial applications, namely the H264 video codec and a wavefield synthesis application for 3D audio.
